The Yeltz end September with five wins out of five as we defeat Rushall to stride up the table
Brief Overview
It was just the one goal that was needed to defeat a well drilled and in-form Rushall side. Making it seven goals in 10 appearances this season in all competitions, Jason Cowley started the attack that led to his goal. A pass forward from Ben Cassidy to the Yeltz number 9, saw him release Samson Hewett down the left. The latter drilled the ball across the box, for Cowley to slam it into the top right.
Match Report
It was a warm Tuesday evening at The Grove, with temperatures on the night peaking at 21°C. The Yeltz started this contest in fine form, and showed their brilliance very early on. Inside five minutes, Samson Hewett found Ryan Wynter, up from the back, who acrobatically hooked the ball into the box. On the end of the pass, was Todd Parker, whose cross was palmed away by former Redditch United & Stourbridge keeper Ollie Taylor.
Tonight’s Man of the Match was Jim Kellermann, who continued his fine form after early season injury. The Yeltz midfielder found a ball through to Cowley seven minutes in, who found Taylor off his line, but lacked any conviction in his effort to punish the Pics keeper. The Yeltz number 9 hit the bar just before the quarter hour mark, as he received a pass from Hewett, and went for the most audacious of efforts, hitting the top of the bar.
We were rampant, and a minute later, Parker found a pass into space for Dan Meredith to do his usual maraude down the right. The fullback, and August POTM, whipped a cross into the box. The Rushall keeper missed his punch, but Cowley failed to profit from the misjudgement. The ball sailed wide again three minutes later, as Wynter, bringing the ball up from centre half, passed to Kellermann down the left. The latter stood a ball into the box, where Matt Preston attacked, but headed wide.
This was largely the last of the goal mouth action until our deserved opener on 33 minutes, but the possession and momentum stayed in our favour the whole way. The visitors did have the one shot at our goal before the end of the half. A ball sent through from ex Yeltzman Luke Yates, found Liam McAlinden, whose effort 1v1 on the right edge of the box was saved by Dan Platt.
Just like Wellingborough on Saturday, our level took a dip in the second half, and allowed the visitors to get a foot hold in the match. Four minutes in the second 45, a pass into the box found fullback Carter Lycett, who 1v1 effort was superbly kept out by the feet of Platt. The Rushall defender continued to cause us problems, and in the resulting minutes found a cross which Alex Moore headed wide, and another for Alex Cameron who failed to touch the ball into the net in the middle.
Yeltz found brief parity at the hour mark, and started to go after the second knowing the away side were a real threat. Two chances in as many minutes before the 75th minute nearly profited in a second. A combination between Kellermann & Hewett found Josh Bailey down the left, whose cross was cleared out for a corner by Jordaan Brown. The delivery from Kellermann was cleared by Brad Burton. A minute later, Cassidy’s cross from the right found the head of Wynter in the middle of the box, who failed to direct the ball goalwards.
It was a back against the wall period for Rushall before added time, as we continued to find a goal to wrap up the points. The Yeltz hit the bar, as a Cassidy cross from the left wing bounced off the woodwork twice, before a Kellermann cross from outside the box was drilled across goal.
As the minutes ticked forward, the visitors pressure and frustration grew. The Yeltz defended remarkably at the end of the contest. Just five minutes were added on, but that soon became seven. The visitors had numerous advances into the Yeltz box, and crosses that were cleared. Their biggest chance to salvage a late draw saw Kaiman Anderson waiting in the middle for a cross from centre half Brown, and very nearly diverting the ball into the net.
