Halesowen score FIVE in a stunning first half in a 6-2 win at Barwell

Match Report

The Yeltz opened the scoring inside the first five minutes. A Fin Holmes cross was cleared Jahdahn Fridye-Harper. The resulting throw in from Rob Evans was cleared, but the ball returned to him to whip in a cross which was headed in by Jason Cowley. The hosts equaliser came a little over five minutes later. A superb long ball forward from Prince Mancinelli found Dan Jarvis on the left, who opened his body up and curled a beauty into the top right.

A 15 minute period of madness came just after the hour, and the Yeltz scored not one, two or three goals, but four. The second on the night through a Cowley curler, the third and his hat-trick courtesy of an open goal, the fourth a Wollacott tap in, and the fifth + Cowley’s fourth through another open goal.

Too little surprise the second half wasn’t not packed full of the action we have seen in the 45 minutes prior, but the Yeltz were still able to add a sixth goal. Substitute AJ George was the man who won the penalty, which was exquisitely tucked away by Ty Barnett for his fifth Yeltz goal. The hosts were able to add a late consolation for 6-2 through Tyree Wilson’s second league goal of the campaign.

The introduction to the game may have belonged to our groundbreaking start, but the visitors pushed hard themselves up until their eventual equaliser. The first attempt of the contest came the way of Zayn Hakeem, after he was set up by Anthony Dwyer to shoot over the bar. The Barwell number 9, Hakeem, had a swift shot after the Yeltz opener, as he hit a shot straight at Dan Platt.

The pressure at both goals was coming quick and fast around the half way stage of the first 45. A 19th minute Ethan Hill run past Reece Mitchell from a Yeltz attack, saw the Barwell winger move forward before being brought down by Josh Smile. Goalscorer Dan Jarvis’ free kick delivery was directed into the box, and just dealt with by Platt. Two minutes later Jason Cowley passed out to McKauley Manning on the wing. The latter had Jak Hickman up with him, but went for a cross which was knocked out by Freddie Cook. The delivery from Manning was dealt with by the punch of 38 year old Liam Castle.

In the minutes that followed, Smile hit a shot over the bar, before two efforts at either end arrived on 24 minutes. A shot from Jim Kellermann went just wide of the post at The Deen Master End, before the hosts went up the other end and a good ball into the box was almost turned in by Dwyer. Just after the half hour mark, The Yeltz won a corner and Manning went to the far post with his delivery. The ball flew to Cowley, who met the ball well, but hit the side netting. The last chance of the half saw Hill go close to the visitors three minutes before stoppage time and in between the barrage of Yeltz goals.

Unsurprisingly the second wasn’t jam packed full of action, but after the scenes of the first half, we will let Russ and the lads off on this one (= Anyway, back to the game. The opening stages of the second 45 started in a rampant fashion. A free kick was given on 52 minutes for the Yeltz after Manning’s quick feet was too fast for Jarvis. Manning took the free kick short to Hickman, whose cross was punched by Castle.

Two minutes later, a big chance for the hosts to reduce the deficit went begging. A cross from Harry Hawkins was directed towards Hakeem, who failed to put the ball into the net at the back post. Three minutes before the hour, Holmes found Cowley, who won a corner after Prince Mancinelli stuck a foot in on the Yeltz number 12. Hickman’s right footed delivery was won by Ryan Wollacott, before a Hickman cross was cleared by Jahdahn Fridye-Harper. The hosts proceeded to go up the other end, and Hakeem curled an effort, which went just wide.

That was largely it for the remainder of the match, but the bigger story shares more of an excitement at what might be to come from the Yeltz. It was the first time we had scored six in a single league game since April 2022, and the first time a Yeltz player had scored four goals in a single match since Simeon Cobourne in August 2022.
