Halesowen thrash Quorn in a statement win at The Grove

Match Report

The Yeltz, for the first time at home since October, managed to score in the first half. At long last… A long throw down the right from Rob Evans was flicked on by Milan Butterfield on the by-line, and landed to Dyan Wollacott, whose sliding finish rolled into the bottom left corner. The Yeltz doubled the lead just over 10 minutes later, as Reece Mitchell’s pass through the middle and out to Fin Holmes, saw the later skill his way past one, glide past the other and smash a shot past Adam Harrison.

The visitors found their way back into the game courtesy of a penalty won by half-time substitute Gustavo Sanches after being brought down by Jak Hickman. Zak Goodson’s penalty was saved by Dan Platt, but Deen Master was alert to the loose ball to head into the net inside the six yard box. The goal didn’t worry the Yeltz one bit, as goals from Hickman on 70 minutes and Holmes’ second on 85, saw us over the line to a remarkable 4-1 victory.

The visitors looked on the back foot from the start, and it only took four minutes for the first defensive error. A mistake at the back was pounced upon by McKauley Manning, who received the ball in the centre on the edge of the box, and found Jason Cowley. The Yeltz number 9 went for a shot which was saved by the feet of Adam Harrison. Just after the 10 minute mark, The Yeltz hit Quorn on the break, as Cowley thread a ball through to Fin Holmes down the right. The visitors got men back quick, but Holmes found Manning on the edge of the area, whose shot was blocked by Deen Master.

The visitors had chances of their own in the opening quarter of an hour, but both shots were comfortable for Dan Platt. Jacob Fenton slides a ball through to Simeon Cobourne on the left of the area. The ex Yeltz man found Cain Noble in the middle, who forced a save down low from Platt. Just before the 15 minute mark, a spell where Quorn have been so prolific this season, in fact the most, Fenton found Goodson in the middle, whose shot was straight at Platt.

The game entered into a dry spell after the quarter hour mark, and before the half hour mark, but it soon sprung into life with the 32nd and 43rd minute Yeltz goals. That was not it for the first half action, a Cowley sprint saw a Holmes shot saved, Holmes’ cross to Kellermann headed over, and a Milan Butterfield header in stoppage time superbly tipped wide by Harrison.

The chances are the start of the second half were at a premium, with Russ Penn’s side in a comfortable position, and the hosts struggling to build momentum. A 55th minute free kick was awarded to the visitors though, after Josh Smile brought Reece Fyfe down to ground. Zak Goodson’s strike hit Holmes in the wall, before two corners followed, the second of which headed wide by Fyfe from Goodson’s delivery.

The Quorn penalty just after the hour mark, came out of the blue, but didn’t affect us. The third goal arrived less than 10 minutes after the setback, and beforehand A huge misjudgement from Harrison allowed Cowley to rob the ball, and find Manning in the centre, who passed on to Kellermann who shot over the bar.

The fourth goal for the boys in Royal Blue felt inevitable. A superb save from Harrison came from a 72nd minute Manning free kick, before a huge chance went begging 10 minutes later. A Cowley & Holmes linkup on the break, saw the former find the latter down the right, whose shot at an angle smashed off the post and into the visitors grateful possession.

Two minute later it was the reverse of the chance at goal just over a minute before, as Holmes placed a ball down the right to Cowley, who dragged a shot wide of Harrison’s right post. Our fourth of the day followed less than a minute later, the fourth time since late November that we have scored 4 or more goals in a single game.
