Match Preview | Real Bedford (H)

The Yeltz welcome the league leaders to The Grove to start part one of the August Bank Holiday weekend

Head to Head

There has been just the two meetings between the two sides, and both came last year. A 3-2 home win for us almost a year to the day, and a last minute 2-1 defeat in Bedfordshire in March.

The most recent meeting at The Ledger Stadium saw the hosts take the lead just under 10 minutes after the half-time break. Ben Stevens found Josh Setchell down the right, who beat Reece Mitchell for pace before dispatching a right footed effort past Dan Platt’s near post.

Our equaliser didn’t come until the 82nd minute, as a Fin Holmes cross to the back post found Jason Cowley. The latter landed awkwardly on the deck, but still managed to find now Pirates man Jordan Ponticelli to head into the net from close range. The hosts winner came in the final minute of the six additional, as a pass from Ben Weyman in the middle found Jack Morrell down the left, who found the bottom corner with a low driven strike.

Russ Penn’s Thoughts

“We come into this game off the back of a good away result. I was really impressed with our resilience. Having been in this league for a couple of years now, I know Needham is a tough game. A side relegated from step 2 just two years ago, and a long trip on top of that.

“We play a side today, who are probably the best team in the league. They have started the season impeccably, and are a very well run. They are still a new team on the block, but we’ve done our homework, and are now ready and prepared to face them.

“A lot can be taken from the two close games against Rob’s side last season. Every club have their own bogey team, and I’m sure they will have a lot of respect for us, as we do for them. Now, there are a few players who have played for both sides, who were good for us, but time moves on.

“There is more than one reason why we have such a good home record, and the fans contribute to 50% of that. Everyone associated with this club cherish and look forward to a Saturday afternoon at The Grove, and it’s up to us get them going, but it works the other way as well. I’m looking forward to a game between two teams on matchday 4, early in the season, battling it out.”
