Match Preview | Redditch United (A)

Halesowen make the short trip to play-off contenders Redditch United in a local derby at The Valley

Head to Head

The two clubs have met 43 times since the start of the 1970’s, in which the Yeltz have won 17 (39%). There aren’t many bogey sides for us, but we have only won two of our five meetings with Redditch since Russ Penn was appointed manager in February 2024. The last meeting  came back in October, but it was far from a memorable derby. The opening Yeltz goal was a deserved one at the time after a dominant opening 30 minute spell. Jason Cowley, who won a corner off Joel Shambrook in the box, headed and bundled the opener into the net at the back post. A quick fire double at the start of the second 45, saw the visitors take the lead all thanks to teenage substitute Fabian Reynolds. The 19 year old was heavily involved for the second four minutes later, setting up former Yeltz man Alex Cameron for a tap in. An exact carbon copy of the second goal, allowed for Cameron to score his second of the game, again from a Reynolds assist. The Yeltz managed a consolation goal nine minutes before the 90 through Cowley, a brace for the Yeltz number 9 in defeat.

Russ Penn’s Thoughts

RUSS ON THE MOOD IN THE CAMP

“The mood in the camp is very good, in fact it couldn’t be higher. Obviously since the turn of the year we have had four wins from four. We have scored some good goals, and limited the amount we have conceded at the back. We have played some tough teams and at some difficult places and put out very good performances. But the aim is to continue this form and make sure the camp’s mood doesn’t dip.”

RUSS ON A POTENTIAL OVER RELIANCE ON COWLEY’S GOALS

“I’ve never agreed with us relying too much on Cowls for the goals. Yeah, we do rely on him, but that is because we pay him to score. If he scores all our goals this season then brilliant because that means we’ve got what we paid for, but if other lads can contribute or have then even better. I don’t look at goal tallies at the end of the season, but this is why we have players like Cowley, Ty Barnett, and Fin Holmes, to put the ball in the net.”

RUSS ON OUR OPPONENTS

“Redditch are a top side, and will be right near the top come the end of the season like everyone expected pre-season. Every team in the league seem to have some of our old lads, and Redditch will certainly be no different. We go there expecting a big crowd, a good turnout from our fans, and at the end of the day it’s a local derby. We will be respectful, humble, and hopefully come away with the result we want.”
