Unlucky Halesowen fall to defeat in Suffolk despite numerous second half efforts

Match Report

The Yeltz got off to a shaky start in the pretty nice November sun in Suffolk. A Max Maughn cross towards the centre was picked up by Blues top scorer George Quantrell. The latter got away a shot, although tame, which gave Platt an early test. A minute later Bury took the lead, as an Ollie Canfer header bulged the net. Our response was good, and six minutes later Fin Holmes profited from a quick reaction to a mix-up at the back to slam the ball into the top left. Fin’s second goal of the season, both away from home.

The hosts controlled a large proportion of the proceedings in the minutes that followed, and another goal felt inevitable. And indeed it was. In the 32nd minute, George Quantrell added his fifth league goal of the season after finding the bottom left with a sweetly hit low driven effort. The Yeltz pushed hard for an equaliser in the second 45, but the goal never came and the three points were Bury’s

The game was lively after the opening goal from Canfer. 10 minutes into the contest, Holmes broke away and through the Bury midfield and towards the penalty area, but his strike was straight at Charlie Beckwith. A minute later, Maughn who caused the Yeltz numerous problems down the right in the opening 45, slid past Reece Mitchell. As he cut onto his left foot, he decided to square the ball across to Tommy Hughes on the edge of the box, whose effort went over the bar.

After our goal and a 15th minute Jak Hickman free kick which went to the back post, which missed Milan Butterfield, the hosts entered their dominant stage. A George Quantrell low driven strike to the bottom right was superbly tipped away by Platt, who got down quick and was able to palm the ball away from the reach of Maughn on the rebound.

Three minutes later, Hughes found Quantrell on the edgy of the box, who attempted a threaded a ball through to Ethan Mayhew, which the Bury number 4 couldn’t quite get on the off. The Bury number 6, Hughes, was involved again on the hour mark, as he skipped past one in midfield to the gaze and cheer of the home fans to find Canfer. The striker held up the ball well to Mayhew who found Maughn on the right. The latter’s cross into the middle was on the money, but Alex Gudger was positioned well to stick a foot out and divert the ball away from danger, for now.

Bury got the goal to re-take the lead two minutes later, and a third was almost added even before first half stoppage time. A cushioned knock down from Maughn fell to midfielder Mayhew. The latter’s cross to the middle was headed over the bar by Canfer, attempting to add his second goal of the game and season.

In stoppage time, Quantrell’s effort smacked off the post and into Platt’s grateful gloves, but a minute before the Yeltz had a golden opportunity, and potentially game changing moment. A superb move started with a Josh Smile pass to Holmes on the left. The latter cut inside on route to the box, and just before he got to it, curled an effort which went agonisingly over the bar.

The Yeltz made a desperate attacking change at half-time, which saw Ty Barnett come on for Mitchell, and the 40 year old’s impact was pretty much instant to start with. A break through the middle from Holmes, saw the teenager thread a ball to Barnett, who five minutes after being introduced, had an effort at goal saved. Just under 10 minutes later, Cowley won a corner, which was taken by McKauley Manning. The Yeltz number 11 crossed for Barnett in the middle of the area, who jumped with the keeper, won the ball, but headed over the bar.

The Yeltz chances were coming like buses in the 10 minute period after the hour mark, but all four chances were not taken. The best  two opportunites, saw Barnett head out to Holmes on the left for the first, who played in backwards to Manning. The latter’s cross from left back, a changed position during the game, was flicked on by Cowley, but just wide off the right post.

The second golden chance fell two minutes later to Manning, who profited from a nervy headed clearance in the box from a Hickman free kick. The Yeltz playmaker had the goal at his mercy, but somehow stuck his strike at the back post into the side netting from five yards out. The other two chance were less clear cut, but still crafted openings. A Manning whipped cross to Cowley on the left saw Beckwith make a save from a flicked header, shortly after Todd Parker shot saw Taylor Parr clear the ball away from Barnett on the rebound.

Into the final 20, the Yeltz chances become less frequent, and to be honest, Bury’s defence dealt extremely well with all we had to throw at their backline. This point was proven on the 82nd minute, when a chance occurred which nine times out of 10 would have seen the net bulge. Substitute Charlie Wragg on for his first away outing since September, cut inside, had not one, two but three efforts cleared off the line.

As if you thought it couldn’t get even more gut wrenching, Holmes got in on the act and had an effort off the line himself, before Bury somehow cleared the ball away. The game ventured into the five minutes of added time, which turned into almost 10, Bury had a shot cleared off the line from a Mikey Davies effort in the fourth of those allotted minutes.

As the game stretched into the 99th and then 100th minute, the Yeltz were adamant to lob it forward, and win a knock down, but Bury got to everything first. And as a fan said to us after the game, they have picked up hardly any points from games they deserved to win, but this time roles were flipped, and they came away with everything despite many arguing the result could have gone another way.
