Halesowen stuggle to defeat to Redditch United in a second half to forget for Penn’s side

Match Report

The opening Yeltz goal was a deserved one after a dominant opening 30 minutes from Penn’s side. A landmark 10th goal for the club came the way of Jason Cowley, who won a corner off Joel Shambrook in the box, before he headed and bundled the opener into the net at the back post. A quick fire double at the start of the second 45, saw the visitors take the lead all thanks to teenage substitute Fabian Reynolds.

The man on loan from Wolves got the equaliser, after Aram Soleman swept a ball to Harry Eden on the left, who played a central ball to Reece Flanagan. The latter saw Reynolds in space, threaded a ball through, and the youngster with the aid of a deflection, did the rest. The 19 year old was heavily involved for the second four minutes later, receiving a ball from midfield from their number 10 Liam Loughlan. Left sided winger Reynolds found space to drift a cross to the back post, which was turned in by Alex Cameron.

The former Yeltz striker who scored twice in 18 appearances last season for Penn’s side, added his second on the night, and fifth of the league campaign in just nine games on 73 minutes. An exact carbon copy of the second goal, Loughlan found Reynolds on the left, who squared across for Cameron to tap home, this time in a more central position. The Yeltz managed what proved to be a consolation goal nine minutes before the 90, as Cowley headed a cross from the right into the top corner at the back post. A carbon copy of his first.

In front of a quarter packed Grove on top of a good away following, the Yeltz took the game to the Reds early on. Inside five minutes Fin Holmes found McKauley Manning, who came back into the XI after he featured as a substitute in our last two matches. The Yeltz number 11 passed to Cowley in the box, who won a corner off Max Ram. The delivery from Manning was flicked away at the near post by Harry Eden. Just after the 10 minute mark, a pass from former Yeltz man Reece Flanagan was cut out on the right by Jak Hickman, who found a gap forward to Holmes. The defender won a corner off Ram, which was palmed away by Tyrese Warmington from Manning’s delivery.

The Yeltz recruit from Solihull Moors, Holmes, was involved in the majority of our play in the opening 45, and a cross from the 19 year old set up the latest chance. The ball into the box was cleared by former Yeltz academy man Dexter Dudley-Toole to Josh Smile on the edge of the box. The midfielder held off constant pressure from the Reds’ midfield to find Hickman on the right, whose cross to Cowley saw the Yeltz number 9 head over the bar. Holmes proceeded to have a shot saved by Warmington, before four minutes later, the best chance of match of the opening 30 fell to the feet of the teenager. After he won the ball off Tyler Bruck in our half, Hickman cleared to Cowley to set us on the break, who swept a through ball to Holmes. Inside the area, the man making his 11th Yeltz appearance, hit a show low to the bottom left which was superbly kept out by the outstretched feet of Warmington.

The Yeltz opener was much needed at the time, as before the goal, the Reds started to grow into the contest. A Cameron pass to Flanagan under pressure, saw the latter sweep a ball over to Eden bombing down the left. The latter got a cross into the area, which was headed clear by Stan Straw. Summer recruit from King’s Lynn Town, Matt Warburton started to get on the ball, and with a man of his quality, unsurprisingly started to dictate alongside Flanagan. A shot from Warburton flew over the bar on 26 minutes, shortly the midfielder found Soleman, who passed on one more to Liam Loughlan. The latter found Eden on the left, whose cross fell into Platt.

The Yeltz goal followed, but the momentum was lost, and Redditch saw multiple avenues to goal. A 37th minute Joel Shambrook burst from right back and forward through the middle saw him find Loughlan. The Redditch number 10’s picked out Flanagan, whose drift wide and shot saw a corner awarded, which was flicked clear by Alex Gudger. Four minutes later, a Flanagan corner was whipped to the edge of the box where Soleman hit over, shortly before the Reds best chance of the half. The man at the centre of everything, Flanagan, found Loughlan on the edge of the area, whose cross fell thread a ball inside the box to left back Eden. The defender stood a cross up towards the back post, but Reece Mitchell was there first to head off the line.

The majority of the second 45, aside from the last minutes across normal and the seven minutes of stoppage time which turned into eight, was very uneventful for the Yeltz. A Rahis Nabi free kick two minutes from the restart was smashed just over the bar, and after that, the Redditch onslaught arrived. Two goals in four minutes, all thanks to the pockets of space half-time substitute Reynolds found himself in.

A third seemed to be on it’s way, and before the Reds eventually got the goal, Loughlan had a shot saved by Platt just after the hour. A free kick was awarded four minutes later after Cameron held up the ball, before Loughlan was fouled in the middle. The duo of the latter and Warburton stood over the ball, and it was Warburton whose effort flew over the bar. Cowley managed to grab a goal back nine minutes before stoppage time, and it created a mini revival, as the Yeltz number nine went through on goal but wide on 85 minutes, and had a point blank header cleared off the line by Dudley-Toole in the eighth minute of additional time. The great escape from defeat failed, but on another day, one of those two chances would have guaranteed to bulge the net.
